stop v-ing, stop to-v
  • When the teacher came into the classroom, the students stopped talking.
  • They stopped to listen, but there was no sound.
stop, arrest, check
A driver uses brakes to arrest his car's speed.
An awning over the sidewalk checked his fall.
stop, desist
Once I'm determined to do a thing, no one can stop me from doing it.
He finally desisted in his fruitless efforts to find the missing heir.

The government ordered them to cease and desist from false advertising.

We stayed up until midnight talking about our work.
I stopped up to watch the match.
